Building and Establishment Automated Mapper (BEAM)
The Building and Establishment Automated Mapper (BEAM) project is a collaborative innovation between the City of Cape Town and UNITAC Hamburg (UN-Habitat). It leverages machine learning to detect informal settlements and backyard structures using publicly available geospatial data, including aerial imagery and LiDAR. The project aims to enhance spatial planning, service deliver, and data-driven decision-making across municipal departments. BEAM supports inclusive urban development by identifying vulnerable communities and enabling targeted interventions.
